 Zanzibar Itinerary

Trip Length: 12 Days – Stone Town • Kairo Village • Zanzibar Island

Note: This itinerary may be adjusted based on local partnerships, school schedules, community priorities, and participant needs.

Day 1 of 12

Welcome to Zanzibar!

Your Zanzibar adventure begins in historic Stone Town. After arriving on the island, meet your GIVE guides and fellow travelers, settle into your accommodations, and get your first glimpse of the winding streets, coastal scenery, and cultural traditions that make this place unforgettable. An opening orientation introduces the purpose of the GIVE × Therapy Abroad collaboration: learning from local communities before working alongside them. Begin considering how culture, history, language, education, and relationships influence health and opportunity. The journey begins with people, place, and a new perspective.

Field Learning Lens

Global Health & Cultural Foundations: Explore cultural humility, ethical engagement, and the connections between community life, education, and wellbeing.

Day 2 of 12

Explore Stone Town and Restore Mangroves

Begin the day with a guided walking tour through Stone Town. Explore its layered history and reflect on how historical experiences continue to shape communities and opportunities today. In the afternoon, turn toward the coast for a paddleboarding experience through mangrove waterways and an introduction to GIVE’s mangrove nursery. Join locally guided restoration work and discover why caring for coastal ecosystems is connected to the wellbeing of people who depend on them.

Field Learning Lens

Social Determinants & Environmental Health: Connect history, geography, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship with community health and livelihoods.

Day 3 of 12

Engage with Educators and Arrive in Kairo Village

Explore the educational landscape of Zanzibar through a locally coordinated conversation or visit with educators, community development partners, or public health stakeholders, where schedules allow. Learn how local voices describe educational access, opportunities, and challenges for students and families. Travel across the island to Kairo Village, where GIVE has developed a longstanding community partnership. Settle into your beachside home, meet your hosts, and start seeing how community-led education and everyday wellbeing connect.

Field Learning Lens

Education Systems, Accessibility & Community Health: Observe how educational opportunity, communication, local infrastructure, and family support can influence participation.

Day 4 of 12

Explore Kairo Village and School Initiatives

Walk through Kairo Village with local guides and meet the people behind GIVE’s continuing community initiatives. Learn about Skuli ya Kairo GIVE, the primary school supported through this partnership, and hear directly from local educators about learning, participation, and the school’s place in village life. Discover ongoing school and community-improvement projects and, where suitable, join locally directed project work. The goal is to understand the community’s strengths and priorities before contributing to educational activities later in the week.

Field Learning Lens

Community Engagement & Asset Mapping: Practice respectful listening and notice the local networks, educators, resources, and relationships that support learners.

Day 5 of 12

Connect with the Community and Learn Local Perspectives

Travel with GIVE’s local team to a neighboring village and begin the first day of guided community outreach. Through introductions, conversations, and observational activities, learn from residents, families, and community leaders about local experiences with education, communication, and access. Rather than arriving with ready-made solutions, use community-led questions to understand what is working well and where local partners see opportunities for new resources or inclusive educational support. Share observations with your group as the camp planning process begins.

Field Learning Lens

Community Priorities & Inclusive Education: Explore participatory listening, local strengths, educational opportunity, and social factors shaping daily life.

Day 6 of 12

Observe Schools and Community Wellbeing

Continue your community learning journey with another village visit or educational setting. Where local schedules and permissions allow, observe classroom activities and speak with educators about the approaches they use to support children with different learning styles and needs. Consider how language, classroom design, access to resources, family relationships, and movement influence participation. This is a chance to connect introductory ideas from communication sciences, occupational therapy, physical therapy, education, and public health with locally shared experiences.

Field Learning Lens

Communication, Child Development & Accessibility: Consider inclusive learning environments and culturally responsive ways to notice and support participation.

Day 7 of 12

Collaborative Camp Planning and Community Outreach

One more day of village-based outreach allows time to deepen relationships and compare observations from different community settings. Ask questions, reflect on community strengths, and learn about the experiences and priorities that local partners want represented in the two-day learning camp. Return to Kairo and begin building a collaborative camp plan with local educators and GIVE’s team. Consider accessible storytelling, arts, cooperative games, music, and movement-based activities, adapting ideas to the ages, languages, and interests of the children who may attend.

Field Learning Lens

Collaborative Program Development: Translate community feedback into locally guided plans for inclusive, age-appropriate, nonclinical activities.

Day 8 of 12

Full-Day Safari Blue Ocean Adventure

Recharge with a full-day adventure on the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Today’s Safari Blue excursion offers opportunities for a boat trip, snorkeling, and taking in Zanzibar’s spectacular marine landscapes, subject to weather and local operating conditions.

Field Learning Lens

Wellbeing & Environmental Connections: Explore the importance of recreation, responsible tourism, marine environments, and community sustainability.

Day 9 of 12

Inclusive Community Camp and Educational Play

Today your group puts its collaborative preparation into action. Spend the morning working alongside GIVE’s local team and community educators to finalize activities for an inclusive community learning camp designed around locally identified interests. In the afternoon, welcome participating children and families for games, storytelling, movement, creative activities, and educational play. Work in small teams, follow the guidance of local partners, and notice how small changes in instructions, pacing, or materials can make group learning more accessible. This is where listening, planning, and collaboration come together.

Field Learning Lens

Inclusive Learning & Community-Based Practice: Apply introductory ideas about communication, adaptive recreation, development, and supportive participation.

Day 10 of 12

Community Camp, Feedback, and Celebration

Build on the first day by reviewing feedback and adjusting activities with local educators before the afternoon camp. You may change group structures, visual cues, games, or movement options so participants can engage in ways that suit their interests and abilities. Welcome children and families back for another afternoon of connection, creative expression, and learning through play. Close with a community-centered celebration, reflecting on the relationships built and the learning resources or activity ideas partners might wish to use in the future.

Field Learning Lens

Responsive Programming & Sustainable Engagement: Practice adapting plans based on feedback and recognizing local leadership in decisions about continuity.

Day 11 of 12

Community Empowerment, Dhow Cruise, and Farewell Dinner

Say goodbye to your Kairo hosts and begin the journey back to Stone Town. Along the way, visit CHAKO, a women-owned social enterprise transforming discarded materials into upcycled art and home goods. Explore how local entrepreneurship, creativity, and environmental responsibility can expand community opportunities. Return to Stone Town for a special final evening: a sunset dhow cruise and farewell dinner. Celebrate the friendships formed and the people who welcomed you into their community, and share how the experience has reshaped your understanding of global health and education.

Field Learning Lens

Community Empowerment & Final Reflection: Connect economic opportunity and environmental sustainability with education, culture, and wellbeing.

Day 12 of 12

Farewell Zanzibar & Continue Your Adventure

Enjoy your last morning on the island before transferring for departure or continuing your journey in East Africa. From the historical streets of Stone Town to community learning in Kairo and the island’s extraordinary ocean scenery, this program has offered many ways to explore learning with purpose. Carry home the perspectives you gained from educators, community partners, fellow travelers, and local hosts. Interested in traveling onward? With GIVE, you can continue your East African experience to Mainland Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro.
