Tanzania Itinerary
Trip Length: 10 Days*
*Winter trips are slightly shorter than summer trips due to school/holiday breaks
Day 1
Welcome to Tanzania
Touch down in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city. You’ll meet your fellow travelers and GIVE guides, settle into your accommodations, and rest before the adventure begins.
Day 2
Southbound to Kilwa
After breakfast, we’ll leave the city behind and travel south through Tanzania’s countryside to Kilwa, a peaceful coastal town shaped by fishing, Swahili culture, and centuries of history.
After settling in, explore Kilwa on foot with our local guides. Visit the fishing harbor and fruit markets, meet community members, and begin understanding the rhythms of daily life in the place you’ll call home for the next several days.
Days 3-5
The Spirit of Kilwa
These days are filled with culture, connection, and community-led conservation. Visit traditional salt farms and learn from local families who have worked the land for generations. You’ll also prepare and share a traditional meal alongside community leaders while learning more about daily life and culture in Kilwa.
Travel by boat to the UNESCO-listed islands of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara, once powerful centers of trade connecting East Africa with the Middle East and Asia. Local guides will bring more than 1,000 years of history to life as you explore ancient mosques, palaces, markets, and ruins.
You’ll also work alongside local conservation leaders to help protect Kilwa’s coastline and marine ecosystems. Replant mangroves with the same community partners GIVE worked with to plant more than 10,000 mangroves last year, helping strengthen the coastline and restore the fisheries local families depend on. You’ll also join marine biologists for an introduction to coral reef propagation and the work being done to restore the surrounding ocean environment.
Day 6
Sunrise and A New Journey
Wake early for one final sunrise in Kilwa, walk along the beach, and spend some time exploring town before heading inland toward the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park.
Arrive at a secluded eco-lodge along the Rufiji River, where hippos, birds, and other wildlife surround you. Tonight, fall asleep to the sounds of the river and the wilderness beyond.
Days 7-9
Safari & the Soul of Tanzania
Experience Tanzania’s wildlife from both land and water. Take a sunset boat safari along the Rufiji River, passing hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife, before heading into Nyerere National Park for a full-day game drive in search of elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and more.
Beyond the safari, spend time learning from the Maasai and Datoga tribes and gaining a deeper understanding of their traditions, livelihoods, and relationship with the surrounding land.
Cross the river to visit a local farmers’ cooperative and learn what it means to live and farm beside a powerful river shared with large wildlife. Work alongside the community to replant trees that help stabilize the riverbank, reduce erosion, and protect farmland from the river’s fast-moving currents.
These days bring together wildlife, culture, and community-led conservation for a deeper look at the people and ecosystems that make this region extraordinary.
Day 10
Farewell, For Now
Return to Dar es Salaam with new friendships, unforgettable stories, and a deeper understanding of Tanzania. Whether you’re heading home or continuing on to Mount Kilimanjaro, the people, places, and meaning of this journey will stay with you long after you leave.
