 Nicaragua Itinerary

Trip Length: 11 Days – Jiquilillo • León • Cerro Negro • Matagalpa

Note: This itinerary may be adjusted based on local partnerships, school schedules, community priorities, and participant needs.

Day 1 of 11

Welcome to Nicaragua!

Your journey begins in Managua, where the GIVE team will welcome you to Nicaragua. After arriving at the airport (MGA), travel together to the Pacific coast and settle in at Hotel Jiquilillo Beach, your home for the first part of the program. Meet your fellow travelers and take part in an introduction to the people, places, and partnerships that shape this experience. The opening orientation sets the tone for a week of respectful listening, cross-cultural learning, community collaboration, and unforgettable exploration. A new country, a new community, and a new way to learn.

Field Learning Lens

Cultural Humility & Global Health Foundations: Begin connecting health, education, local context, and community strengths. Discuss how to be a thoughtful learner and guest in a new setting.

Day 2 of 11

Jiquilillo Village & Coastal Conservation

Get to know Jiquilillo through a locally guided community orientation. Learn about the coastal setting, meet members of the GIVE team, and begin exploring how community initiatives, local knowledge, and environmental stewardship connect. Today also introduces conservation work in the region. As you hear from local partners and explore the surrounding environment, consider how a healthy coastline supports livelihoods, recreation, community identity, and long-term wellbeing. Activities will follow local priorities and conservation conditions. Discover how caring for a place can support the people who call it home.

Field Learning Lens

Environmental Health & Community Wellbeing: Examine how environmental conditions, local resources, and sustainable community projects affect everyday health and participation.

Day 3 of 11

Building Relationships and Inclusive Learning in Jiquilillo

Today is about relationships. Spend time learning from community members and local partners about family life, educational experiences, communication, and opportunities for children and young people to participate in learning. Through guided conversation and educational engagement planned with local hosts, explore how language, disability inclusion, access to resources, and community strengths influence everyday life. The goal is not to arrive with answers, but to understand what the people already doing the work consider valuable. Meaningful learning starts with relationships, not a checklist.

Field Learning Lens

Inclusion, Communication & Social Determinants of Health: Practice community-centered observation and explore how culture, language, accessibility, and local support systems shape educational participation.

Day 4 of 11

Play-Based Learning and Turtle Conservation

Explore communication and development through play-based learning. With guidance from GIVE and participating community partners, consider activities such as storytelling, cooperative games, movement, music, and creative expression that can welcome learners with different interests and abilities. The day also brings attention to sea turtle conservation, a powerful window into environmental responsibility on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. Learn about the importance of locally guided protection efforts and responsible encounters with wildlife. The exact conservation activity will depend on timing, regulations, and local conditions. Where inclusive play meets a commitment to protect the coast.

Field Learning Lens

Child Development, Adaptive Play & Conservation: Connect communication, motor participation, and accessible play with broader lessons about local stewardship and responsible community engagement.

Day 5 of 11

Community Empowerment, Surfing, and Cultural Exchange

Continue your community learning through locally coordinated outreach and shared activities. Draw on what you have heard so far to engage respectfully, support existing priorities, and see how partnerships grow through consistency and collaboration. Then experience another side of the Pacific coast: surfing! Enjoy time outdoors and explore how recreational activities bring together physical movement, confidence, teamwork, and enjoyment. Cultural exchange throughout the day offers space to listen, share stories, and connect with your hosts beyond the classroom. Water activities depend on weather, ocean conditions, and safety guidance. From meaningful community time to an unforgettable day by the waves.

Field Learning Lens

Community Participation, Physical Wellbeing & Cultural Exchange: Explore how recreation, access, relationships, and culturally responsive communication contribute to individual and community wellbeing.

Day 6 of 11

Historic León and Volcano Boarding Adventures

Trade the coastline for history and high-adrenaline adventure. Explore León on a city tour and take in its architecture, culture, and distinctive atmosphere. This is a chance to experience another side of Nicaragua and reflect on how place, heritage, and community life intersect. Next comes a true Nicaragua highlight: volcano boarding at Cerro Negro. The volcanic landscape creates a memorable setting for courage, teamwork, preparation, and trust. After the adventure, continue to Matagalpa and settle into VERA, the planned base for your highlands experiences. Volcano boarding depends on weather, local operating conditions, and safety requirements. A historic city, an extraordinary volcano, and a new chapter in the highlands.

Field Learning Lens

Cultural Understanding, Teamwork & Adaptive Challenge: Reflect on communication under pressure, group problem-solving, personal resilience, and the importance of understanding a destination beyond a single community.

Day 7 of 11

Discover Matagalpa Through Community Voices

Begin the highlands portion of your journey by getting to know Matagalpa and the people shaping community initiatives there. Meet with locally coordinated partners as available and learn about priorities around education, family wellbeing, accessibility, and participation. Compare what you are learning in Matagalpa with your experiences in Jiquilillo. Different environments can mean different opportunities, challenges, and ways communities organize resources. Use guided listening and reflection to understand what local partners hope to accomplish through educational outreach and the upcoming community learning camp. The best starting point for service is asking what matters locally.

Field Learning Lens

Community Asset Mapping & Responsive Program Planning: Explore social determinants of health, relationships with community stakeholders, and the value of adapting plans to local needs and feedback.

Day 8 of 11

Inclusive Education and Community Outreach

Put the lessons from your community conversations into practice. In coordination with local partners, support educational outreach that centers communication, active participation, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. Possible learning activities include accessible storytelling, language-rich games, movement-based stations, art, and group challenges, selected with the community rather than imposed from outside. You will also begin preparing for the two-day community learning camp by thinking about materials, roles, flexibility, and how to make every participant feel welcome. Connect academic interests with locally guided educational experiences.

Field Learning Lens

Interprofessional Learning & Accessible Activity Design: Bring together introductory ideas from communication sciences, OT, PT, education, and public health to design inclusive, nonclinical learning experiences.

Day 9 of 11

Community Learning Camp: Day One

It is time to bring your collaborative preparation to life! Working alongside GIVE’s local team and participating community partners, help welcome children and families to the first day of the community learning camp. Depending on local priorities and participation, the day may feature interactive storytelling, arts and crafts, cooperative games, music, movement, or other play-based learning stations. Your role is to encourage participation, listen to educator feedback, support an inclusive environment, and notice the many ways children communicate, collaborate, and learn. Two days of learning, creativity, and community connection begin here.

Field Learning Lens

Applied Inclusive Education & Community-Based Learning: Practice teamwork, communication support, responsive facilitation, and reflection in educational activities organized with local partners.

Day 10 of 11

Community Learning Camp: Day Two & Celebration

Build on the first camp day by reviewing what worked, listening to feedback, and adjusting the learning activities alongside local partners. Small changes in communication, materials, group structure, or pacing can make a big difference to participation and enjoyment. Share another day of learning and connection before celebrating your time together. As the program draws to a close, reflect on the relationships you have built and on any locally requested educational games, materials, or activity ideas that could remain useful after the group leaves. The focus is always on community ownership and continuity rather than one-time solutions. Celebrate connections and leave space for future locally led learning.

Field Learning Lens

Adaptation, Feedback & Sustainable Community Engagement: Practice responsive planning, interprofessional reflection, and respectful knowledge-sharing guided by the community’s interests.

Day 11 of 11

Farewell Nicaragua & Continue Your Adventure

Enjoy a final morning surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Matagalpa before beginning our journey back toward Managua for departing flights.
