Tanzania Volunteer Program for Adults

13 Days, $3995 (For Ages 40+)

GIVE’s adult volunteer program in Tanzania is designed specifically for travelers over the age of 40, who are looking for a safe, comfortable and meaningful way to volunteer abroad in Tanzania. You will volunteer in the tropical paradise of Zanzibar Island, helping to build a nursery and primary school and teaching fundamental English lessons to local children and adults. During your free time, immerse yourself in the warm and vibrant culture of Zanzibar, set sail on the Indian Ocean, and experience a 2-day wildlife safari in the African Savanna! At the end of your volunteer program, you can choose to extend your trip and climb Mount Kilimanjaro – the tallest freestanding mountain in the world!

Volunteer Projects

English Education

In Zanzibar, primary students must pass a difficult English exam to advance to secondary school, where all classes are taught entirely in English. As a native English-speaking volunteer, you will help put these students in a great position to advance and succeed. Nearly 100 local adults also join our lessons, hoping to improve their English language skills and increase employment opportunities in Zanzibar’s tourism industry. In order to ensure consistent quality of instruction, all lessons are planned and delivered alongside local teachers and GIVE’s TEFL-certified Education Coordinators.

School Construction

Since 2012, GIVE has been working closely with Zanzibar’s Ministry of Education to develop a Nursery and Primary School for the children of Kairo and surrounding communities. Local residents and GIVE volunteers have shared shovels, stories, sweat and even tears, while constructing what now stands as a beacon of hope for education in rural Zanzibar. As of today, more than 140 students are enrolled in the Skuli ya Kairo, receiving their fundamental human right to an education. This number will only increase as volunteers like you continue to build additional classrooms and facilities.

Tanzania Itinerary

Day 1

Trip Commencement: Group arrives in Zanzibar. After a warm welcome and orientation from your GIVE guides, enjoy your first dinner on the beach getting to know your fellow volunteers!

Day 2

Spend the morning exploring our host community of Kairo and learning about the volunteer initiatives you will take part in. Later that morning, you’ll get to see firsthand why Zanzibar is known as the Spice Islands, visiting a spice farm to learn how local spices, herbs and fruit are grown and of course tasting some for yourself!

After the Spice Tour, we’ll head to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone town to learn about its unique history and explore this fascinating labyrinth of winding alleys, street markets and incredible architecture. In the afternoon, we’ll take a boat to Nakupenda Sandbank and relax on this pristine beach in the middle of the Indian ocean, surrounded by white sand and turquoise waters. There’s no better way to cap off your first day than enjoying some delicious local cuisine and watching the sunset from a rooftop restaurant in Stone Town.

Days 3-9

Wake up each day to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. After breakfast, we’ll begin work on our English education and school construction projects. Volunteer until lunchtime and then relax on the beach for a couple hours before returning to the project site for the rest of the afternoon. During our free time from volunteering, we’ll immerse ourselves in the warm and vibrant culture of Zanzibar – learning Swahili language, taking a weaving class with local women, painting with local artists, and taking plenty of time to just relax in paradise.

Sailing Day (Day 6)

Set sail on a local Dohw, soaking up the sun while the wind carries you towards Mnemba Island. Swim in the bluest water you’ve ever seen and grab a mask and snorkel to explore the vibrant coral reefs below. After snorkeling, we’ll sail to Matemwe beach and enjoy a local barbecue on the beach!

That afternoon, we’ll head back to Zanzibar to explore the Jozani Monkey Forest, home to the indigenous Red Colobus Monkey and a stunning mangrove forest.

Day 10

Spend one last morning volunteering in Kairo, enjoy a farewell meal with community members, and then board a flight bound for Arusha – a multicultural city at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Day 11-12

Embark on a 2-day safari in the African savanna! On day 11, we’ll take 4×4 safari jeeps into Lake Manyara National Park in search of lions, herds of giraffes and elephants, and so much more! That evening, we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and cultural performance before gathering around the bonfire at our campground.

Begin day 12 with an early breakfast at camp and then depart for Tarangiri National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for the Big Five: leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, and buffalo! We’ll pass through Maasai tribe villages on our way back to Arusha, where we’ll enjoy our final dinner together and reflect on an incredible two weeks together.

Day 13

Trip End: Group departs from Arusha. All good things must come to an end. Soak up your last few hours in Tanzania before heading home, or extend your trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain in the world!
