 Zanzibar Itinerary

Trip Length: 12 Days*

*Winter trips are slightly shorter than summer trips due to school/holiday breaks

Day 1

Welcome in Stone Town

Touch down in the heart of Zanzibar and get settled into our accommodations in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage city filled with culture, winding alleyways, and amazing ocean views. Meet your GIVE guides, get to know your fellow travelers, and head out to explore the city for the evening as the adventure begins.

Day 2

Stone Town History & Mangrove Restoration

After breakfast, we’ll explore the island’s cultural roots and complex history with a guided walking tour of Stone Town and we’ll also visit a Slave Museum at the former slave markets, an important part of understanding Zanzibar’s long history. Later, we’ll switch gears with a fun paddleboarding trip through the island’s winding mangroves, learning how this vital ecosystem protects Zanzibar’s coastline. Then we’ll get hands-on at GIVE’s mangrove nursery, protecting the coastline from the impacts of climate change.

Day 3

Cultural Projects & Creative Traditions

Today is all about learning from and supporting local entrepreneurs and artisans who are blending tradition with innovation. We’ll visit several small businesses and organizations focused on preserving Zanzibar’s cultural identity while adapting to the island’s growing tourism industry. Get hands-on with a seaweed farming project and learn traditional Batik techniques. These hands-on experiences help preserve Zanzibar’s cultural heritage and empower local artisans.

Day 4

Kairo Village

We’ll head to the peaceful coastal fishing village of Kairo, where GIVE has partnered with the community since 2012 to co-create one of the region’s top-ranked schools. After settling in, we’ll take a tour of the village, go for a swim, and enjoy dinner on the beach. Welcome to your new home away from home.

Days 5-10

Volunteer Projects & Village Life in Kairo

Each day in Kairo offers a unique mix of purpose, community, and adventure. You can choose between teaching English to local kids & adults, lead hands-on lessons in one of Zanzibar’s inly computer labs, or work alongside fundis (local builders) to expand Skuli ya Kairo GIVE, by helping to costruct new classrooms and plant gardens. Outside of volunteering, enjoy daily life in the village: relax at the beach, play soccer with local kids, and join optional nightly dialogue circles under the stars. Hop aboard a traditional sailboat for an unforgettable day on the tourquoise waters of the Indian Ocean with your fellow travelers.

Days 11-12

Final days on Zanzibar Island

We’ll begin our journey back to Stone Town by stopping at a women-owned local social enterprise that creates upcycled art and home goods to help combat trash build up in the island. Learn from empowered local women and take some of your art pieces home with you. Back in Stone Town, we’ll celebrate our final evening with a sunset dhow cruise and family dinner. Enjoy your realxed morning to explore Stone Town before heading home or continuing your East African adventure with GIVE Tanzania or up Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Voices from the ground

Hear from the locals and leaders who bring GIVE to life:

Mcheni

Lead Guide

“I started my GIVE journey in 2014 as a student at an English tutoring class and I learned my English from volunteers. The most impactful part of working with GIVE as an organization is building a school. This is my favorite story ever because it’s the only thing that I can prove to my kids and grand kinds the I helped build Skuli ya Kairo GIVE. I am now a lead guide and I love leading the volunteers on the construction site the most.”

Juma

Local Legend & Jack of All Trades

“In 2011 I met with Jake and Chris and asked them to work together to help the development of Kairo Village. I offered my support in finding people who could speak with the community. We really succeeded. To this day, we thank God, Alhamdulillah.”

Faith Kasha

Lead Guide

“My GIVE journey began in summer 2022 with my first volunteer trip to Tanzania. I fell in love with the people and culture, and felt so at home I knew I had to stay. I’ve been with GIVE ever since! Now, as a lead guide, I love working with a team that feels like family and learning deeply about Tanzanian/Zanzibarian culture. The most meaningful part is watching travelers grow, gain confidence, and discover new parts of themselves through responsible travel.”

Amour

Computer Education Coordinator

“My GIVE journey began while working as a chef at a restaurant GIVE partners with. I was invited to join the team and couldn’t say no. I didn’t know much about computers then, but GIVE supported me to study. Now, I’m proud to help bring development to my community. The most meaningful part is the cultural exchange, sharing knowledge, learning from travelers, and seeing people from different backgrounds unite. Their passion motivates me to keep growing and giving back to my village.”

Talha

Education Coordinator

“My Journey with GIVE started in 2017 as a student with zero English. Now, I know 75% thanks to my teachers at Skuli ya Kairo GIVE. As Education Coordinator, what I love most is seeing the goals we set as a team help both students and volunteers succeed. The most meaingful part is watching volunteers learn and respect our culture while wanting to learn more about it.”

Anuar

Local Legend & Head Chef

“I was a chef at a local restaraunt when I first learned of GIVE. Since 2014, I’ve become head chef and kitchen supervisor for GIVE and cook delicious meals for the volunteers. GIVE has given me so many opportunities. Because of them, I got married, can support my kids’ education, and now lead my own team. I’ve watched this program grow and now all of our guides and staff are local people. GIVE empowers locals and protects the culture of our village. I love to learn from volunteers, share stories, and grow together.”
