Hill Tribe Immersion

Find purpose and connection in Northern Thailand’s jungles.

Live and volunteer alongside remote hill‑tribe communities, teaching English and working on sustainable agriculture projects that boost student nutrition and empower local farmers. Thailand Hill Tribes Itinerary

Trip Length: 14 Days – Chiang Mai • Mueang Khong • Mae Taeng

Note: Winter trips are slightly shorter than summer trips (by 1-2 days) to fit within school and holiday breaks—but you’ll still experience the same projects, adventures, and cultural immersion, just in a more condensed format.

Days 1-2

Dive Into Thai Culture

Meet your GIVE crew in Chiang Mai and kick things off with a warm welcome, a short ride to your accommodations, and your first taste of real Thai food over dinner with the group. The next morning, dive deep into Thai culture, learn a few local phrases, and explore a sacred Buddhist temple. Then hit the famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar for street eats, handmade goods, and your first souvenirs.

Day 3

Journey Off the Grid

Spend the morning at Pun Pun Organic Farm, learning about seed-saving and sustainable living before sitting down for a fresh farm-to-table lunch. Then head deep into the mountains to reach the remote hill-tribe village of Mueang Khong—your new home base. Settle in, explore the community, and get ready to make an impact.

Days 4-10

GIVE back in Mueang Khong

Start your day with sunrise yoga and a local breakfast before teaching English at local schools. In the afternoons, get your hands dirty on sustainable farming projects that boost student nutrition and empower local farmers. Evenings and weekends are packed with adventure—think cave explorations, Thai cooking, tubing the river, pickup soccer, and crafting with local artisans. After dinner, wind down with music, games, and meaningful conversations under the stars.

Day 11

Build Bamboo Rafts

Head into the mountains to the Karen hill-tribe village of Ban Bpa Kao Lam, where you’ll build bamboo rafts by hand with local guides, then gather around the bonfire for stories of conservation, elephant welfare, and what ethical tourism really means—shared by the people leading the movement.

Day 12

Track Elephants & Raft

Before sunrise, trek into the jungle with local mahouts to track semi-wild elephants, learn their behaviors, and feed them herbal supplements. After lunch, bamboo raft down the Mae Tang River to the Lahu hill-tribe village of Pong Ngen—where your final night in the jungle ends with traditional dinner, dancing, and stories around the bonfire.

Days 13-14

Take the Leap of Faith

Ride the final stretch of the Mae Tang River—home to the fastest rapids and most epic jungle views yet. Grab a bamboo pole to help steer or just soak it all in before taking the ultimate leap: a 160-foot bungee jump! (Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? Drift karts are waiting.) That evening, head back to Chiang Mai to reflect, celebrate, and wrap up your adventure—or gear up for the next one with GIVE.

Hear what it’s really  like to travel with GIVE

Voices from the ground

Hear from the locals and leaders who bring GIVE to life:

Chaue “Tony” Palae

Logistics Coordinator

I have been with this program from the beginning, meeting the directors of GIVE on a white water rafting trip and I’ve been part of the family since. As our Logistics Coordinator, I take pride in welcoming travelers to my hometown and watching them teach and connect with local children. For me, the most meaningful part is seeing travelers grow, form deep bonds, and experience the beauty of these hill tribes.”

Boka Palae

Education Coordinator

I joined the GIVE family in 2019 when my older brother, Chaue, asked me to assist during the jungle adventures. Now as Education Coordinator, I support travelers as they teach English, fulfilling my own dream of becoming a teacher. I love bringing humor wherever I go and I find joy in hearing travelers laugh like they’ve never laughed before; this is the place I am meant to be!”

Kritsada Niamjan

Permaculture Coordinator

I joined GIVE in 2024 to inspire others as the Permaculture Coordinator. Since then, I’ve expanded my role to include teaching yoga, cooking, and self-reliance. I love how the team supports one another. I find that the most meaningful part of this work is watching travelers transform, gaining confidence, purpose, and a passion to make a difference by the time their journey ends.

Chelsey Deacon

Education Coordinator

“I experienced immediate personal growth when I first volunteered with GIVE in Southeast Asia in 2019. The connection to the community, students, and mission inspired me deeply. Returning as Education Coordinator, I find joy in watching our students’ confidence and excitement grow daily. Seeing other travelers transform beyond the program and make a lasting impact in their own communities is what makes this so meaningful!

Wathunyu “Nick” Pu-autri

Lead Guide

I joined GIVE in 2020 after hearing about its impact from my best friend. Now, as Lead Guide, I’m passionate about helping travelers connect with local communities through meaningful cultural exchange. I love seeing travelers support education while learning about Thai traditions, language, and daily life. For me, the most rewarding part is watching travelers leave with a deep appreciation for the culture.”
