 Tanzania Itinerary

Trip Length: 10 Days*

*Winter trips are slightly shorter than summer trips due to school/holiday breaks

Day 1

Welcome to Tanzania

Touch down in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s biggest city. You’ll meet your group and GIVE guides, shake off the jet lag, and settle into our accommodations for the night.

Day 2

Southbound to Kilwa

After breakfast, we hit the road and head south off the beaten path. Watch the landscape shift from city to endless stretches of wild countryside to a small coastal village. Arrive in Kilwa, a quiet fishing town steeped in Swahili history and surrounded by the sea. Drop your bags, and settle into your new home before going on a sunset cruise to explore this beautiful region from the water!

Days 3-5

The Spirit of Kilwa

These days are rich with connection and purpose. We’ll explore sustainable salt farms, working alongside local families who’ve harvested here for generations. Then dive into Kilwa’s culture by preparing a meal from scratch, from market to table, and sharing stories in a local home. Venture by boat to the UNESCO islands of Kilwa Kisiwani & Songo Mnara, ancient ports that once ruled East Africa’s trade routes through the Middle East and Asia. Local guides will share the history of the these ancient ruins, mosques, palaces, and markets that date back over 1,000 years. Back on land, you’ll engage in grassroots conservation efforts powered by an amazing team of local marine biologists. We’ll work together on marine conservation projects helping the community as they strive for a sustainable future.

Day 6

Sunrise and A New Journey

Wake up early to soak in one last sunrise in Kilwa, take a long walk on the beach and explore the local town. Then we head inland toward something entirely different: the vast, untamed wilderness of Nyerere National Park. Arrive at a secluded eco-lodge nestled along the banks of the Rufiji River. At night you’ll fall asleep to the sound of hippos in the river below, nature at it’s finest!

Days 7-9

Safari & the Soul of Tanzania

This is where Tanzania roars to life. Embark on a boat safari down the Rufiji River, gliding past crocodiles, hippos, and over 400 species of birds. You’ll head deep into the Selous savanna – the second-largest piece of protected wilderness in all of Africa. Lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants – this is the real deal, without the crowds. But it’s not just about what you see, it’s also about what you do. You’ll support community-driven conservation efforts, from wildlife tracking to sustainable tourism development. Learn from local guides and community members working to protect this incredible ecosystem. This is adventure with impact.

Day 10

Farewell, For Now

Return to Dar es Salaam with new stories, new friends, and a changed perspective. Whether you’re headed home or continuing your journey to Mount Kilimanjaro, the memories, and meaning, of Tanzania will stick with you forever.

Voices from the ground

Hear from the locals and leaders who bring GIVE to life:

Ibrahim Baboi

Program Coordinator

“My journey with GIVE began in 2015 as a student in English classes taught by volunteers in our village. Through that experience, I got to get more involved with GIVE by helping with construction work and joining different adventure days around Zanzibar. That’s when I truly connected with GIVE’s mission. Now, as Assistant Program Coordinator, I enjoy organizing behind the scenes and helping make decisions. The most meaningful part for me is seeing how GIVE travelers grow as they learn about village life, connect with local people, and appreciate our culture. Every trip builds real relationships, that become like family and rafiki (best friends).”

John Miller

Program Director

“My GIVE journey began in 2014, when I was a college freshman seeking something meaningful. I traveled to Tanzania, my first time abroad, and was hooked by the beauty and authenticity of the culture, people, and environment. Since then, I’ve been an intern, guide, and now Program Director. I love creating space for transformation, empowering our local staff to achieve what once felt impossible, and watching volunteers step out of their comfort zone and into the world as they grow into the best version of themselves.”
