GIVE’s Pillars of Sustainable Change
In honor of Earth Day:
See how we gave back in 2023 & join our Go Green with GIVE Week!
We’ve broken down sustainable change into 3 categories, or pillars if you will. When GIVE creates lasting relationships with communities around the world, crafts a program, or adds a new item to our itineraries – we must ask these three important questions: How does this support the local community environmentally, socially, and economically? If the answer is yes for all 3 – it’s a go! If not, it’s back to the drawing board because that is how we create sustainable change through responsible travel. Learn more about our projects within these pillars to create positive change – and join us to Go Green with GIVE this week!
One Team. One Dream.
Socially
-
In Thailand: Kru Amnuoy was officially hired full-time to teach primary education and manage the nutritional farm at Nong Bua School in Mueang Khong
-
In Laos: more than 60 local students in Sop Chem were awarded participation-based scholarships to help offset the cost of their schooling
-
In Tanzania: Skuli ya Kairo GIVE now ranks top school 1 of 10 in the district and 3 of 19 in the region!
-
In Hawai’i: As of today, the entire Hawai’i program is locally led
-
In Nicaragua: Over 20 homes were built this summer, providing 150 people with their basic human right to shelter after their homes have been washed away due to rising sea levels
Environmentally
-
In Thailand: Nong Bua School in Meaung Kong’s nutritional farm has been able to supply food to every student sustainably & allows them an educational space to practice eco-friendly farming
-
In Laos: Our permaculture garden is a fully community-led initiative that now supplies food to over 60 families in Sop Chem, Laos
-
In Nicaragua: We are actively combating the rising sea levels along the shores of Jiquilillo by planting & maintaining mangrove forests
-
In Hawai’i: This summer alone we cleared over 2,500 lbs. of marine debris from the southern shoreline of the Big Island
-
In The PNW: We helped clear tons of harmful exotic plants across Snoqualmie land restoration sites that ultimately will bring native plants into bloom this year
Economically
All GIVE travelers provide economic support to many women & community co-ops, indigenous artists, craftsmen, and leaders throughout every location. For example, in Tanzania, thanks to the support the women’s co-op has received from offering to wash clothes & teach our travelers to weave baskets, they were able to open their own soap business called Letu (Swahili for Ours).
The GIVE Foundation, our sister non-profit, has been able to sustainably supply wages to local staff in all locations & local leaders, such as the mahouts in Huay Pakoot, Thailand year-round. This not only empowers our global community to continue to pursue their passions but also be able to provide for their families and community.
