Rich in Spirit

The Impact of GIVEing

Written By: Ashleigh

As volunteers, we set out to GIVE — to lend a hand, make a difference, and contribute to something greater than ourselves. But I’ve realized that in the process of giving, we often receive something far greater in return. Whether it’s a new perspective, a deeper connection, or a reminder of life’s simple joys, giving has a way of shifting our understanding of what it truly means to be “rich.”

In our fast-paced, urbanized cities, we often become so caught up in our work that we lose touch with those around us. Despite increasing material wealth, genuine social connection is slowly slipping away. In contrast, on my GIVE trip to Tanzania, I witnessed firsthand how many African communities live out the powerful philosophy of “I am because we are.” It became clear that true richness in life doesn’t lie in possessions, but in the relationships we nurture and the joy we share with others.

Though many of these communities may have limited material resources, they are incredibly rich in spirit, passion, and joy, often more so than those with material abundance. It was humbling to see how something as simple as an old notebook or a toy car made from recycled materials could bring so much happiness to children. In our consumer-driven world, we often overlook these simple pleasures, taking them for granted. But there, I realized that true wealth lies in moments of connection and the ability to find joy in the little things—often through the acts of giving and receiving with others.

While I set out to give on my GIVE trip, I received much more in return. The experience taught me the value of contentment and the deep fulfillment that comes from simply spending time with others and connecting on a meaningful level. Despite the intense labor under the scorching sun, the moment we saw the water tank fill and the locals’ faces light up with joy, every effort was worthwhile. Something as simple as fresh water—so easily accessible to us with just a turn of the tap—is still a rare and precious resource for many worldwide. Being part of a team dedicated to making a difference through giving made this the most rewarding summer of my life.

To me, GIVING is about empowering others to help themselves. It’s about bringing the knowledge, resources, and opportunities we have to help others improve their lives. But it’s also about learning from them, experiencing their culture, and recognizing that wealth is not measured by the things we own but by the lives we touch and the relationships we cultivate. So go, and GIVE. You’ll find that in doing so, you will be GIVEN something more beautiful in return.
